Little Free Library Initiative: Bringing the Joy of Reading to Mysore
TASK Educational, Charitable and Welfare Trust is expanding its commitment to literacy through the Iqra Program by introducing Little Free Libraries (LFLs) to the community of Mysore. This initiative aims to foster a shared culture of reading and intellectual growth for all ages.
The Trust is currently creating and planning to place three (3) Little Free Library boxes in Mysore. These boxes will be stocked with a variety of books, encouraging residents to engage in a community-based book exchange. A 2025 study found that 92% of children reported having more access to books because of the program.
Understanding the Little Free Library Concept
The Little Free Library is a global movement that TASK is delighted bringing to Mysore. The concept is based on a simple, honor-system book exchange: "Take a book, share a book."
A Global Movement: Little Free Library is a worldwide non-profit organization dedicated to building community, inspiring a love of reading, and sparking creativity through shared book exchanges.
The Library: It's a small, charming, weatherproof structure—often resembling a dollhouse or large birdhouse—placed on a post in a public area.
How It Works: Anyone can walk up, open the door, and borrow a book they'd like to read. The only expectation is that they will return that book or contribute another book in its place to keep the library stocked for the next reader. No library card is needed.
Community-Driven: LFLs are maintained by local volunteers, known as "stewards," and they serve as vital, accessible anchors of literacy that benefit everyone in the neighborhood, young and old.
As of early 2025, over 400 million books have been shared globally through more than 190,000 registered libraries
What is Little Free Library
A Little Free Library is a grassroots, global movement to promote literacy and neighborhood connection, built around the simple, enchanting idea of a small, decorative, public book-sharing box. Operating on the honor system of "Take a Book, Share a Book," these volunteer-led libraries make books accessible 24/7, transforming front yards and street corners into mini-town squares where neighbors connect over a shared love of reading and community. The movement began in 2009 in Hudson, Wisconsin, and you can learn more about its mission, find a Little Free Library near you, or become a Steward yourself by visiting the official website at LittleFreeLibrary.org.
